Phase 1: Foundation Learning (Week 1-4)

Week 1: Tools & Design Fundamentals

Topics:

  • Design tools setup (Figma)
  • Understanding existing design system
  • Brand guidelines and visual identity
  • File organization and naming conventions
  • Basic UX principles

Self-Learning:

  • Figma tutorials (components, auto-layout, variants)
  • Explore all existing design files
  • Study brand guidelines document

Deliverables:

  • Figma proficiency demonstrated
  • Design system components reviewed
  • Brand guidelines understanding documented
  • Recreate 2 existing screens in Figma

Checkpoint: Friday review with design lead


Week 2: UX Fundamentals

Topics:

  • User research basics
  • Persona development
  • User journey mapping
  • Information architecture
  • Wireframing techniques

Self-Learning:

  • UX fundamentals course/resources
  • Review existing user personas
  • Study current user flows

Deliverables:

  • User journey map for 1 feature
  • Persona analysis document
  • UX audit of 1 existing screen
  • Low-fidelity wireframes for 1 flow

Checkpoint: Friday review with senior


Week 3: UI Design & Components

Topics:

  • Layout principles and grids
  • Typography and color theory
  • Component design patterns
  • Responsive design principles
  • Accessibility basics

Self-Learning:

  • UI design tutorials
  • Study component library
  • Practice creating components

Deliverables:

  • Redesign 1 screen following design system
  • Create 3 new reusable components
  • Responsive variations documented
  • Accessibility checklist completed

Checkpoint: Friday design review


Week 4: Prototyping & Handoff

Topics:

  • Interactive prototypes in Figma
  • Micro-interactions and animations
  • User flow prototypes
  • Design handoff best practices
  • Introduction to actual projects

Self-Learning:

  • Prototyping tutorials
  • Create interactive prototype
  • Explore current project designs

Deliverables:

  • Interactive prototype for 1 complete flow
  • Micro-interaction examples
  • Handoff documentation practice
  • Current projects explored

Phase 2: Guided Real Projects (Week 5-8)

Work on actual design projects with close senior supervision

Week 5: First Real Design Task

Focus:

  • Assigned first real design task (small, well-scoped)
  • Understanding design requirements and constraints
  • User research for the task
  • Daily check-ins with design lead

Deliverables:

  • Design brief understood
  • User research conducted
  • Initial wireframes created
  • Feedback collected and iterated

Checkpoint: Friday design critique


Week 6: Design Execution

Focus:

  • High-fidelity design completion
  • Design system consistency
  • Accessibility considerations
  • Stakeholder presentation

Deliverables:

  • High-fidelity mockups completed
  • Design follows system guidelines
  • Presented to stakeholders
  • Feedback addressed

Checkpoint: Friday review with senior


Week 7: Second Design + Developer Collaboration

Focus:

  • Second design task (larger scope)
  • Collaboration with frontend developers
  • Design handoff process
  • Design QA on implemented work

Deliverables:

  • Second design in progress
  • Handoff to developers completed
  • Design QA conducted
  • Developer feedback addressed

Checkpoint: Friday review + developer feedback


Week 8: Design Completion + Learning Gaps

Focus:

  • Complete second design
  • Address any learning gaps
  • Prepare for independent work
  • Design system contributions

Deliverables:

  • Second design completed
  • Learning gaps addressed
  • Small design system contribution
  • Ready for Phase 3

Checkpoint: Month 2 Evaluation


Phase 3: Independent Ownership (Week 9-12)

Own design projects end-to-end with minimal guidance

Week 9: Independent Design Project

Focus:

  • Assigned design project to own completely
  • End-to-end: research → wireframes → high-fidelity → handoff
  • Self-driven timeline management
  • Stakeholder communication

Deliverables:

  • Project scope understood independently
  • Research completed
  • Wireframes ready
  • Timeline managed

Checkpoint: Friday check-in (guidance only if blocked)


Week 10: Design Completion & Handoff

Focus:

  • Complete independent design
  • Full handoff to developers
  • Design QA
  • Demo preparation

Deliverables:

  • Final designs completed
  • Interactive prototype
  • Developer handoff done
  • Demo to team

Checkpoint: Friday demo to team


Week 11: Ownership + Knowledge Sharing

Focus:

  • Design system contributions
  • Help other designers/interns
  • Document learnings
  • Process improvement suggestions

Deliverables:

  • New components added to design system
  • Knowledge document created
  • Process improvements suggested
  • Peer support provided

Week 12: Final Wrap-up & Presentation Prep

Focus:

  • Complete any remaining work
  • Portfolio preparation
  • Final presentation preparation
  • Self-assessment writing

Deliverables:

  • All designs completed and handed over
  • Portfolio of all work compiled
  • Final presentation prepared
  • Self-assessment document written

Week 13: Final Evaluation & Conversion

  • Final presentation to leadership
  • Portfolio showcase
  • Evaluation meetings
  • Conversion decision
